Which one to use, Traditional or modern re-upholstery?

Traditional upholstery involves the crafting of natural fibers applied using traditional tacks, twine and hand sewing. In order to create comfortable, long lasting beautiful, and functional furniture.

A lot of skill and time goes into traditional upholstery, which is reflected in the labour costs making it the more expensive option for upholstery and re-upholstery. But saying that, it is extremely hard wearing, lasting for many years, and is historically sympathetic to antique pre-1950's furniture.

Modern upholstery in comparison, is generally a quicker technique and is comprised of foam, poly or cotton wadding and applied using staples. Foam can degrade over time, but does give you a clean, smooth finish perfect for post 1950's furniture.

Often the best option and the one I use widely is to combine traditional and modern materials and techniques. This gives you the longevity and beauty of a hand crafted finish, but also keeps the costs down.

STITCH: Upholstery and Re-covering, and what's the difference.

Upholstery involves both the strip down, back to the show wood/frame, and skillful re-building of the seat and re-covering with a top fabric. Or when possible, preserving, strengthening and restoring carefully and sympathetically the original filling and then replacing the top fabric. You can also at this point change and re-shape your furniture, i.e.. removing deep buttoning and re-shaping with a smooth flat modern finish.

Often the frame and fillings of a quality piece of furniture can out last the fabric covering, and this is where re-covering only is required. Re-covering includes removing the top fabric and checking the stability of the filling, replacing where needed, and then re-covering with some lovely new fabric of your choice. With so many gorgeous fabric companies out there, this is a time when you can easily create your own bespoke, statement piece of furniture.

STITCH: Pricing

Because of the nature of re-upholstery it is impossible to tell what you'll find underneath the top cover by looking alone and what might need replacing. Prices will vary depending on the condition of individual pieces, which is why estimates are first given out. Once the full condition of the piece has been assessed I will then let you know of additional work and costs.

Here's an idea of some re-covering costs to help you plan.

Approximate prices only not inc. top fabric:

Drop in dining seat: £25 + 0.5m

Stuffover dinning chair £35 +0.5/1m

Ottomans: £150 + 3m
